Karesuando

This is a wonderfully authentic village from which to base your Lapland getaway. Karesuando is a village of two parts – half sitting in Finnish Lapland the other half in Swedish Lapland. This pretty, remote place is divided by the natural border of the Muonio River with the majority of the local population residing on the Swedish side of the river. No matter which side of the river your accommodation is based, you can hop over the road bridge into another country and another time zone!

The resort of Karesuando is located approximately 300km above the Arctic Circle. It lies in a unique location, sitting in both Finland and Sweden, split down the middle by the Muonio River. In Finland, the village is known as Karesuvanto and in Sweden, Karesuando. With an overall permanent population of less than 500 inhabitants, most reside on the Swedish side of the village. You can cross the border via the road bridge which is a short walk from the accommodations offered by our tour operators, into a different country with a different currency and into a different time zone! In fact, if you are staying over New Year, you can celebrate midnight in both Sweden and Finland on the same night an hour apart! Children love the time travel aspects of this resort too!

No matter how you are spending your time in Karesuando, you will be fully immersed in your surroundings and the abiding traditions of the village. Whether you’re visiting on a Santa break, an Arctic experience or to celebrate the New Year in a very special way, the resort is charming, peaceful and incredibly beautiful. You will feel a million miles from home in this snowy wonderland.

The village borders a vast wilderness with an abundance of nature and sweeping snow-covered countryside. From the top of Kaarevaara Hill on the Swedish side of the village you have a fantastic view of Sweden and Finland across to Norway and to Pältsa Mountain, part of the Scandinavian Mountain range. Karesuando is also the heart of the homeland of the reindeer-herding Sámi people, who traditionally provide the warm hospitality of true Lapland.

With its snow-covered forests and designated dark sky area, Karesuando is the perfect setting to enjoy a variety of arctic activities as well as look out for the elusive northern lights.

The resort offers a small selection of comfortable, cosy and rustic accommodation options for your Lapland break.
